Ways to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Hi guys! After a long stint of not being on my Social Media sites for medical reasons, I am back and on my game! This blog post is all about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After having two seizures, I have realized that no one should be taking life for granted. We should all be living life to the fullest (I know so cliche- but so true) and we should be taking care of our bodies. After having to go through many exhausting tests to figure out what is causing my seizures, I realized that maybe I should be taking care of my body better. Here are a few things that I think we should all be doing to maintain a healthy lifestyle:

  • Eat a healthy breakfast- I know that it sounds so redundant, but it is true. Starting the day off with some good protein is a way to help kick start your metabolism for the day. My favorites are eggs, peanut butter and toast, and yogurt with cereal. Of course, I eat all with a piece of fruit too.
  • Drink of water throughout the day- Staying hydrated throughout the day is very important. It boosts our energy levels which keeps you highly motivated throughout the day.
  • Eat your fruits and vegetables- Both fruits and vegetables contain nutrients important for your body. To keep a healthy lifestyle you should be eating a good amount of them each day.
  • Exercise! Exercise! Exercise!- Exercising helps improve everyone's fitness levels. It also improves our well-being. You can do anything from a walk to joining to playing a sport.

This along with many other things will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid having medical concerns like seizures!

Motivational Monday

Being that it is Monday and everyone is either back at work or school, it can be a struggle. Everyone is coming back from a fun filled weekend, and wish that it could have been at least a day or two longer! At least I do! So I have decided that each Monday I will quote a motivational quote that I think will help everyone get through those miserable Mondays- at least I hope they will!
Here is todays!

Summer Workouts- Worth the Try!

When school is out for the summer, we all have more time and freedom to do more things that we cannot do throughout the year. Instead of the weekly routine at the gym,  we can be more opened to other  workout routines that we can do outside during the summer with the nicer weather. Here are a few options that I am looking forward to doing this summer instead of going to the gym on such a beautiful day:
  •            Hiking is and always will be one of my favorite workouts, as the weather gets better. It is a way to be one with nature, and workout all at the same time. You can find any hiking sites near you through the Internet, and can make it either an intense or leisure hike.
  •         Taking a splash with swimming as the weather turns to becoming a scorcher is one sure way to cool off on these brutal summer days. You can stay cool while still working out at the same time. It also develops strong and lean muscles throughout time and improves posture!
  •         Beach volleyball is another workout worth the try this summer. We all love to take day trips to the beach, and we can get a good cardio session and strength training session in with a good game of beach volleyball. It is a total body workout that is worth the try! I know I will be trying it the next time I head to the beach.

These three workouts are among many others that I will be trying this summer instead of going to the gym. Why stay inside when you can be out on such a beautiful day in the summer?

Colored Runs for the Win!

A new and popular fitness activity that is gaining popularity throughout the United States is the Color Run. From Run or Dye, to The Color Run the name basically says EXACTLY what it is. A color run is a 5k fun walk/run. Now you are probably thinking to yourself, what is the catch? There is the word, “color,” in the name, what is the deal with that? Throughout the 5k there are different stations of different colored powdered dyes that volunteers throw on you! If you want to get more color you can slow down at the stations!
Hearing all of this hype about colored runs, I needed to go see what it was all about. Going to DC this weekend, my sisters and I participated in the Run or Dye 5k.  It was so much fun, and we got completely covered with color! However, it was pretty disorganized and we waited over two hours in line just to check in! Other then that, it was more of a walk because everyone was enjoying getting covered in colored dye, and there were only a few runners out there! My recommendation is that if you go to ANY color run, to expect to get very colored, and if you do not like to get dirty then don’t go! It was more of a fun walk then serious run, with families participating in it, and people dressing up! Overall, I think that everyone should participate in one at least once in their lifetime with families and friends!

Low Calorie Beers- Worth the Try!

In my previous post, I talked about the oh-so delicious cocktails at half the calories for these scorching summer days at barbeques. After reading my own blog post, I realized that some people do not like cocktails, and would instead prefer a nice, cold, refreshing beer instead. Beer can rack up in calories, so here are your best choices for drinking delicious tasting beers with fewer calories:

  •       Guinness Draft- this beer is not as filling as some of the others, with a mere 126 calories! Although it may seem like a lot, it is less then both Budweiser and Heineken! With fewer than 10 carbs, it has less then a Sam Adam’s Boston Lager with 18 carbs per serving.
  •       Not feeling the Guinness Draft? How about a nice cold refreshing Rolling Rock! With only 120 calories, it goes down lightly,
  •       Abita Purple Haze is another beer to try out for your next BBQ or summer shindig! Brewed with a raspberry puree, it has only 128 calories and 11 carbs it is worth the try!
  •        Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a fourth, delectable beer to try out! With more calories then the ones before, coming in at 175 calories with good reasoning! The taste is 50 times stronger then your average beer because it has more hops, meaning it has more alcohol content. Although it may be high in calories, it also is high in the antioxidant, polyphenols, which helps lower cholesterol and fight cancer!
  •        Peak Organic Winter Session Ale is both pesticide and herbicide free with at 150 calories.

These are 5 of many beers that you could try out instead of higher calorie beers that will be worth the switch!
